The new musical production boasts some of George and Ira Gershwin's most beloved songs as well as some unknown gems. The Broadway premier at the Imperial Theatre is scheduled for April 24, 2012 with previews running from March 29. The new musical features a talented cast which includes the beloved stage work of Matthew Broderick. With a fantastic musical score based on the Gershwin catalog and great cast "Nice Work If You Can Get It," is sure to provide a night of pronounced fun and entertainment.
The new musical is written by Joe DiPietro, based on material by Guy Bolton and P.G. Wodehouse. The early workshop for the production was subject to many delays, but finally, the Broadway staging is complete. Dipietro's work was originally produced back in 2001 at the Goodspeed Opera House under the name "They All Laughed!" The production received mixed reviews but was picked up by producers. The first workshop began in 2007 and included Harry Connick Jr. The title for the show had changed to " Heaven on Earth." The fresh and reworked musical was set to debut at the Colonial Theatre in Boston in December 2008 with a Broadway debut in 2009. The production team, however, soon ran into problems and disbanded. The musical was called to a temporary halt while looking for new finance and production. Adding to the problems, Harry Connick Jr. withdrew from his commitment to star in the production.
Brand new work on the musical began on October 8, 2010 with Matthew Broderick and Sutton Foster, with Kathleen Marshall directing. After several workshops, fresh titles, new actors and delays the production was ready for Broadway. Nice Work If You Can Get It tickets went on sale at the box office of the Imperial Theatre with an official opening night on April 24, 2012. The musical is scheduled for an open-ended run.
The story takes place in the 1920s during the prohibition era. Jimmy Winter is an affluent lady' man who is about to marry for the third time. However, he comes across a tempting bootlegger, Billie, and they fall in love. He accompanies her in her bootlegging pursuits, including hiding the alcohol at his manor on Long Island. Billie's chums, Duke Mahoney and Cookie McGee, are chased by the Vice Squad. Jimmy's deliberate bride, Eileen Evergreen, and her aunt, the Duchess Estonia Duckworth, become enmeshed in the bootlegging plot. Although their worlds are far apart Jimmy and Billie have a happy ending. The musical includes many classic Broadway show tunes and some new gems from legendary song smiths George and Ira Gershwin, which are sure to please audiences this spring.
