Larry Kramer's Powerful Play Debuts On Broadway

Normal Heart tickets for Broadway provide one of the most powerful evenings in theater history. The semi-autobiographical play was written over 25 years ago by Larry Kramer. The play takes a deep look at the AIDS epidemic as it unfolds in New York City between 1981 - 1984. The story is viewed through the eyes of Ned Weeks, who is the gay Jewish founder prominent HIV advocacy group. The experience plays out as a political thriller/drama at the Golden Theatre and is scheduled to close on July 10, 2011. Normal Heart has won the Tony Award for Best Revival Of A Play and certainly a production not to be missed!

Larry Kramer is an American playwright, author, public health advocate. He began his career working for Columbia Pictures and reworking scripts. He developed a controversial and commanding style with his first 1978 novel "Faggots." Kramer would soon lay witness to the onset spread of the AIDS virus among his friends in the early 1980's. With the growing epidemic apparent he began the Gay Men's Health Crisis or GMHC. Kramer soon became upset with the problems within the group (and was kicked out) and the social ignorance of the virus leading to the writing of "Normal Heart." The play opened off-Broadway at the Public Theatre in 1985. The play would be revived in Los Angeles and London and return to Off-Broadway in 2004. Normal Heart tickets are on sale now for the Broadway debut scheduled for a limited-engagement.

Kramer uses the play in order to present his story and feeling on the events which occurred. The play holds no punches with accusations thrown around to Mayor Koch, The New York Times and the medical community. Some of the accusations may be questionable to the viewer. The New York Times had come out to defend themselves on the plays opening night against some of Kramer's comments and views. Normal Heart is outspoken to say the least, full of rage and anger, which only intensify as the show goes on. The audience can feel Kramer's unrelenting and almost hysterical sense of urgency. Considering the subject matter and the way in which Larry Kramer was effected by the epidemic it all feels quite justifiable.

Normal Heart tickets present a wonderful cast, including Joe Mantello as Ned, John Benjamin Hickey as Felix Turner and Ellen Barkin as Dr. Emma Brookner. The story was written by Larry Kramer, and the Broadway debut is directed by Joel Grey. Ellen Barkin took home the Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play with John Benjamin Hickey taking the equivalent "actor" award. The Normal Heart is just as powerful and meaningful as it's original premier. Twenty-five years has not taken one ounce of potency out of the fact-based account of the AIDS virus and those effected by it first hand. For any fan of theater and plays, it would truly be a shame to miss this one!
