NY Mets Tickets
The Shea Stadium has been the home of the New York Mets since it opened on April 17, 1964. The Mets lost the Stadium’s inaugural game 4-3 to the Pittsburgh Pirates, in front of their 48,736 fans. Prior to this, the team played for two years at the Polo Grounds. The decision to build a home for the Mets was taken in October 1961, and the ground for the Flushing Meadow Park was broken on October 28 that year. Later, it was decided to name the Park in honor of William A. Shea – the person who, after the departure of the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Giants to California in 1957, was responsible for the return of National League Baseball to New York. The Stadium
Designed by Praeger-Kavanagh-Waterbury, the Shea Stadium was the first stadium that could be converted to play both, baseball and football. The Stadium cost $28.5 million and took 29 months to build. It has a seating capacity of 55,300 for baseball and 60,000 for football. The Shea Stadium is a great tourist attraction, and has had more than 73 million fans through its gates.
The Shea Stadium, home of the NY Mets, also served as a home for their rivals, the New York Yankees for two seasons. This was when the Yankee Stadium underwent extensive renovations in 1974 and 1975. 1975 was only year when the two professional baseball teams – the Mets and the Yankees, and the two football teams – the Giants and the Jets, played at the same stadium.
Other than baseball and football, the Shea Stadium has hosted a number of different events, including other sports, cultural events and entertainment. August 15, 1965 saw over 60,000 Beatles fans screaming at the outdoor stadium during the concert by the Fab Four. Other legends of music, such as Rolling Stones, The Who, The Police, Simon & Garfunkel, Elton John and Eric Clapton have also had their concerts at the Stadium. There was a visit by Pope John Paul II. Other events, such as college and pro football, soccer, boxing, religious conventions, among others, have also been held here.
The Stadium underwent major renovations between 1985 and 1987, which included 50 suites on the press level, large blue windscreen panels on the exterior, and neon outlines of baseball players, among others.
In the very recent past, the Shea Stadium served a very grave purpose – as a relief center after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.The Tickets
