After three and a half years of continuous run on Broadway, since it opened on October 30, 2003 after previewing on October 8 at Broadway’s Gershwin Theater, Wicked – the musical is still running to full houses. On March 11, 2007, Wicked completed its 1404th performance. Wicked is a ‘must see’ musical, and its enthusiasts speak highly of it. Its two original lead actresses - Idina Menzel, who played Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West; and Kristin Chenoweth, who played Glinda, the Good Witch of the North; have performed in a ‘show stopping’ manner, to say the least.

No wonder Wicked has won a number of awards and endless accolades. It has the following in its kitty:

Three Tony Awards out of ten nominations in 2004

Six Drama Desk Awards out of eleven nominations in 2004

Four Outer Critics Circle Awards out of ten nominations in 2004

One Drama League Award out of three nominations in 2004

One Eddy Award for Outstanding Costume Design (Susan Hilferty) in 2004

One Grammy Award for the Best Musical Show Album in 2004

One Helen Hayes Award out of three nominations in 2006

Three Touring Broadway Awards in 2006

Five nominations for Jefferson Awards in 2006

The Theater

The musical – Wicked – opened at the Gershwin Theater on Broadway. The theater is named to honor one of America’s greatest composers, George Gershwin, and his brother, Ira Gershwin - the lyricist. The Gershwin Theater with 1,900 seats is one of the nine theaters on Broadway, owned by the Nederlander Organization. It opened on November 28, 1972 with a space musical called Via Galactica. It was then known as the Uris, and was renamed the Gershwin on June 5, 1983. The Gershwin theater is the first legitimate theater built on Broadway after 1928.

Spectacular musicals, concerts, ballets and plays have been showcased on the stage of the Gershwin, with Oklahoma!, Riverdance On Broadway, Tango Argentino, Peter Pan, On the Town, 1776, Candide, Show Boat, and Tommy Tune Tonite! being some of them. In 1990, it staged Fiddler on the Roof, which won the Tony Award for Best Revival.

Bing Crosby, Nureyev, Margot Fonteyn and Frank Sinatra were some of the superstars who made concert appearances on the stage of the Gershwin. The Gershwin Theater also houses the Theater Hall of Fame. On display throughout the main lobby are the costumes, opening night gifts, props, stage notes, and other items from the personal collections of Broadway luminaries, such as Carol Channing, Julie Harris, Lynn Fontanne, Angela Lansbury, Bernadette Peters, John Raitt, Chita Rivera, Tommy Tune, and Irene Worth, among many others.
