Now is the time to see Oleanna if you have not done so before. This two person play encompasses the ultimate power struggle between men and women. It also reflects the differences in how men and women interpret actions and words between each other.

This play was first written in 1992 at the height of the Anita Hill and Clarence Thomas sexual harassment controversy in America. This is also when the ideas of political correctness was coming into our collective psyche. The play Oleanna reflects these themes in its 90 minute stage presence. It was written by David Mamet and first performed at Harvard in Cambridge, Massachusetts. University influence is also present as this play takes place in a college professor’s office.

The play Oleanna which is on Broadway currently stars Bill Pullman and Julia Stiles. They star as the sole two characters and the play centers around the conversations that they have during their two meetings in the office.

Bill Pullman plays John. John is a college professor who thinks very highly of himself. He wants to be tenured and respected by both his colleagues and students. His student, Carol played by Julia Stiles, at first respects and admires him. She comes to see him in his office to get a grade improved. He uses his power over her by making her feel insecure as compared to his degree of higher education. She essentially feels subservient to him because of his position, age, and male dominant persona.

After their initial conversation, the meeker of the two, Carol, files a sexual harassment claim against him which nearly ruins his reputation at the university. In Oleanna, the two characters hash out their differences and the audience is left tot interpret whether or not John did anything wrong or if Carol is using sexuality as a means of getting what she wants. Some reviews suggest that since she is typically seen as weaker and not as educated, she may have used her sexuality as a last resort to acquire power over her professor.

Other schools of thought surrounding Oleanna suggest it is John who has abused his power over this young and impressionable female student.

Oleanna is the ultimate play that calls for audience interpretation. Audience members are sure to argue the finer points of the dialogue and who really did or said what. Both male and female perspectives are brilliantly expressed through the intricate dialogues. Even though the audience fully sees what takes place between John and Carol, they are left to draw their own conclusions over who was right and who was wrong.

Seeing this play on Broadway is sure to be a memorable experience. Those who see it usually debate the outcome for some time to come.
