The original production included music by Burton Lane and a book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner. The stage show is loosely based on the 1929 story "Berkeley Square." The story tells of a woman named Daisy Gamble which has ESP, which provides her with incredible insights and super power type skills. Daisy can make plants grow, predict when the phone will ring and even find objects people are looking for. Daisy seeks the help of a psychiatrist to help curb her nasty smoking habit. Dr. Mark Bruckner ( Harry Connick Jr.) hypnotizes her, and they soon discover that she is the reincarnation of 18th-century England woman "Melinda Wells" who passed away at a young age. Dr. Mark Bruckner becomes intrigued with Melinda under the hypnosis and begins to fall in love with her. Daisy originally wanted to quit smoking for her fiance Warren, and as she is about to board her plane home, she sees a vision of the plane crashing. Daisy realizes her powers and her fate, reunites with Mark and looks forward to her new-found future.

On a Clear Day You Can See Forever was adapted into a film in 1970. The movie was directed by directed by Vincente Minnelli and starred a talented cast of Barbra Streisand, Yves Montand, and Jack Nicholson. The revised Broadway musical features a cast of Harry Connick Jr., Jessie Mueller, David Turner, Kerry O'Malley, Drew Gehling and Sarah Stiles. The refreshed work strays from the original plot replacing Daisy's character with gay florist David (Turner) who was female jazz singer Melinda in a former life who falls in love with his psychiatrist, Dr. Mark Bruckner (Connick).
