Once Tickets
Once tickets are now on sale for the new musical staged on Broadway. The well received 2006 indie romance film has been adapted for the big stage after an off-Broadway run. Previews began at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre on February 28, 2012 with an official opening night scheduled for March 18. The production is being dubbed "a play with music," separating it from a traditional Broadway musical. Once tickets are scheduled for an open-ended run. The "musical" is set in Dublin Ireland telling a love story between an Irish street musician and a Czech immigrant. The two meet through music and begin working on compositions together over the course of the week. The work collaboration quickly blossoms into an intense friendship. As the two main characters share their love for music, the friendship begins to turn into an emotionally charged yet complicated love story. Once was first adapted for the stage at the New York Theater Workshop, in December 2011. The production received mostly positive reviews. It was instantly set to transfer to the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre on Broadway. The production is directed by the talented John Tiffany. The show feature's music and lyrics by the Swell Season's Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová. The 2007 original film was written and directed by Irish filmmaker John Carney. The independent work was popular in part to the music and acting of Hansard and Irglová. The collaboration landed them a win at the Academy Award for Best Original Song for their song "Falling Slowly" in 2008. The film's two actors have stepped aside, allowing new characters to tackle the Broadway version. The roles will be filled by Steve Kazee and Cristin Milioti. The show includes a fourteen actor company which handles all the music. The adaptation for the stage required some delicate details to help create the intimate setting captured in the film. For example, the theater company hangs out in the Irish pub playing music even as the audience begins to fill the theater. Once tickets are currently available from the box office for all performances. The show is full of romantic soppiness yet engages the audience with energetic foot stomping songs played only by the actors without accompanying orchestra or band. The style used helps bring the songs and characters to life in an intimate way. Playwright Enda Walsh wrote the book and added some memorable moments to the story. The stage production is written closer to a romantic comedy styling then the original "indie flick." The show is sure to entertain the Broadway audience with its endearing charm.
