Pal Joey
BIG TIME MUSICAL COMES BACK!
Roundabout Theatre Company presents a stellar cast in a revival of a classic Broadway musical. Pal Joey begins previews on November 14, 2008 at Studio 54 and is scheduled for an official opening date of December 11, 2008. The production stars Tony award winner Stockard Channing, Matthew Risch and Tony award nominee Martha Plimpton. This mounting of the revival will mark the first in over thirty years.
The production is set in Chicago in the late 1930’s and focuses on Joey Evans a small time schemer and entertainer who wants to run his own nightclub. He sets his sights on an older, married society woman in the hopes that she will fund his latest venture. The show was written by John O’Hara and is based on “Pal Joey” stories that were originally featured in The New Yorker.
Pal Joey first debuted on Broadway in 1940 and starred Gene Kelly in the title role. It was revived in 1952 where it went on to win three Tony awards and set the pace for it to become one of Broadway’s big attraction musicals. Frank Sinatra starred in the 1957 film version. The show was last seen on Broadway in 1976. The score was written by Rodgers and Hat and includes such timeless songs as “Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered” and “I Could Write a Book”. The song “I’m Talking to My Pal” originally written for the character of Joey was cut from the previous productions but will be included in the revival score.
The current production stars Matthew Risch in the role of Joey. Risch is no stranger to Broadway having performed in Chicago and Legally Blonde but this is is most significant role to date. Playing opposite Risch is the versatile Stockard Channing who won the Tony award for her work in the 1985 production of A Day in the Death of Joe Egg. She has also starred in Six Degrees of Separation, The House of Blue Leaves and The Lion in Winter. She is also a two time Emmy Award winner and a Golden Globe and Oscar nominee. Channing clearly is an asset to any ensemble. The production also features Martha Plimpton who was most recently seen on Broadway in The Coast of Utopia and Top Girls both of which she was nominated for a Tony.
Pal Joey is one of those vintage Broadway musicals of the 40’s and 50’s; big talent, bright lights, fantastic score that the choreography just flows with by the end of the show you’ll want to get up and dance, too. It is a feel good production that will have you longing for the era it is set in (for a little while anyway). The show is on a limited run and is set to close on February 15, 2009.
