Roundabout Theatre Company presents this quirky romantic comedy about love and relationships. It opened in February at the American Airlines Theater. This limited engagement revival was written by Craig Lucas and stars Tony Award winner John Mahoney, Annie Parisse and Alan Tudyk. Prelude to a Kiss is a modern day fairy tale told through fantasy but with real life drama and issues mixed in to balance out the story.

The tale begins when two whirlwind lovers follow up their courtship with a “happily ever after” wedding despite the bride’s pessimistic outlook on things. All is going according to plan but before they can get on with forever an unexpected, mysterious older gentlemen appears and kisses the bride thus setting in motion a magical journey the two lovers will not soon forget. With this one kiss the young couple is thrust into a series of uncontrollable events. They travel through time taking on different identities and experiencing hidden thoughts and longings, but in the end they are able to find their true connection of love. Through their journey they uncover the message that will help them sustain a lifetime together.

The revival comes after a successful off-Broadway run starring Mary Louise Parker and Alec Baldwin in 1990, a Broadway production starring Parker and Timothy Hutton and a 1992 film version starring Baldwin and Meg Ryan. The original Broadway production ran for 440 performances, received a Tony nomination for Best Play and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The title of the play is taken from the famous Duke Ellington song. The current production boasts an impressive cast including Mahoney and Parisse. Mahoney in the role of the old man is best known for his eleven year stint as Martin Crane on the sitcom Frasier. He has also won a Tony for his Broadway debut performance in The House of Blue Leaves. Parisse in the role of the bride is best known for her long running roles as Julia on the daytime soap opera As the World Turns and Assistant District Attorney Alexandra Borgia on the television drama Law and Order.

Prelude to a Kiss is a witty, intelligent story that exposes the fears and questions we all carry from time to time about love. As the audience watches the young couple embark on their mystical journey they are rooting for them to come to the right conclusions. The newlyweds not only come to terms with their feelings, but they are taught the true meaning of love in the process. This production is for anyone looking for a fun, light-hearted evening at the theater. Don’t wait too long though since this limited run is only scheduled through the middle of April!
