St James Theater was built by the Shuberts and opened on September 26, 1927, and was named Erlanger’s Theatre, until 1932, when it was renamed as it is now known. The Musical version of The Producers follows the 1968 movie by the same name. The story is based on a Broadway producer – played by Nathan Lane - who is down on his luck and desperate for finances. He and his accountant, a timid fellow, concoct a scheme to make a fortune. They plan a to raise a lot of money to produce a Broadway flop – ‘Springtime for Hitler,’ knowing they will never have to pay back the money. With a musical named ‘Springtime for Hitler,’ how could they not fail? . . . Or did they? Up until November 19, 2006, the musical has performed 2,326 shows to full houses. The show is replete with ‘ridiculous accents, caricatures of homosexuals and Nazis, and many show business in-jokes,’ and many other jokes and scenes taken from the movie.
