The Roundabout Theatre is about to welcome Broadway’s fifth revival of “Pygmalion” by George Bernard Shaw. David Grindley is the director of show, which is based on Greek Mythology. It stars Jefferson Mays and was opened initially on Broadway, in the year 1914.
“Pygmalion” had inspired the show “My Fair Lady”, which is written as well as composed by the duo, Frederick Loewe and Alan Jay Lerner. The screen musical version of this show was made in 1964. It was directed by George Cukor and starred Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison. The movie was such a huge hit that it won eight Oscars. One of them included an award for the Best Picture!
The main character of “Pygmalion” is Professor Henry Higgins, which is played perfectly by Jefferson Mays. Jefferson is a Tony Award winner in 2004, for his breath taking performance in the hit Broadway show “I Am My Own Wife.”
“Pygmalion” is the story of a professor, who believes it is child’s play to change a person’s way of living by changing his or her style of speaking. Under this belief, he sets to change the personality of an uneducated girl called Eliza, who lives on the streets of London. He intends to transform her into an elegant lady with high-class etiquettes and deportation. In the process of inculcating sophisticated communication skills in her, the professor realizes that it’s not easy to change personalities. Apart from altering the speaking style, it’s a whole process of emotional shift that an individual has to undergo.
“Pygmalion” marks the debut of Claire Danes, who plays the role of Eliza. With this show, she grabbed another role in Broadway production named “Stardust.” Here, she stars opposite Michelle Pfeiffer and Robert De Niro!
The creative team of “Pygmalion” includes Gregory Clarke for the stunning sound effects in the whole show; Jason Taylor for the multi-dimensional look of each scene by terrific lighting; and Jonathan Fensom for the perfect costumes and sets that complement each character and make the whole story seem natural on stage. The creative team also has Majella Hurley. He is a dialect coach, who is there to help Jefferson deliver fine accent as Professor Henry Higgins in the story, who takes up the challenge of altering Eliza’s way of speaking.
The previews of “Pygmalion” began on September 21, 2007, at the famous American Airlines Theatre. On October 18, the opening night of the show was scheduled. The show is supposed to run through December 16. Pygmalion Theater NYC Tickets
