Radio Golf On Broadway
CONTEMPORARY POLITICAL DRAMA!This fast paced political drama opened at the Cort Theatre in May. Radio Golf is Pulitzer Prize-winner August Wilson’s final installment in his unprecedented ten play cycle which chronicles the life of African Americans in the twentieth century. Each installment explores the heritage and experiences of African Americans over the course of each decade throughout the century with the final installment bringing the audience into the 1990’s. This production is set in the Hill district of Pittsburgh in the late 1990’s and centers on Harmond Wilks a charismatic entrepreneur who aspires to become the city’s first black mayor. With the support of his wife Mame, Wilks steps into the political spotlight, but as he is making his bid for office his past seems to be gaining on him. As certain secrets are revealed his ambitious career plans could fall apart. Will his political dreams end before he has a chance to truly begin? Wilson’s works often give a detailed, insightful look into the struggles and triumphs of African American living. Some of his other plays include Gem of the Ocean, Two Trains Running and the Pulitzer Prize, Tony award-winning Fences. Sadly, Wilson passed away in October of 2005, but two weeks later the Virginia Theatre was renamed the August Wilson Theatre marking the first time a Broadway theater was named for an African American. This was a fitting tribute for such a pioneer playwright. Radio Golf’s cast is lead by two very impressive actors; Harry Lennix and Tonya Pinkins. Lennix is best know for his extensive film and television career with roles on shows like “24,” “ER” and most recently “Commander and Chief” starring opposite Geena Davis and Donald Sutherland. He portrayed the role of Harmond Wilks at the McCarter Theatre in Princeton New Jersey earlier this year, and was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for Distinguished Performance for his portrayal. Pinkins is best known for her Tony award- winning work in Jelly’s Last Jam in 1992. She has also had several notable film and television appearances including the “Cosby Show,” “All My Children” and “Law and Order”. The audience can relate to this powerful drama because it could have almost been ripped from today’s headlines. It chronicles the hopes and dreams of a successful, ambitious man on his journey to obtaining power and status. It tells the story of how past mistakes can sometimes resurface and threaten to destroy it all. Radio Golf is a timely tale with familiar themes.
