Ragtime The Musical
MUSICAL ABOUT THE PURSUIT OF THE AMERICAN DREAM! A revival of the Tony Award winning musical Ragtime is set to take the stage at the Neil Simon Theatre for previews on October 23, 2009 with an official start date of November 15, 2009. This historical musical of epic proportions is based on the 1975 E.L. Doctrow’s acclaimed novel of the same name and is sure to wow audiences a second time around. The Terrence McNally, Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty’s production was recently presented at the Kennedy Center before confirming this Broadway run. Ragtime music was all the rage in an era where anything was possible. The story is set in 20th century land of opportunity New York City and effectively intertwines the lives of the most least likely eclectic group of people; a poor Jewish immigrant, a wealthy Victorian couple about to take in a runaway and a Harlem Jazz pianist who turns an injustice into a revolution. Throughout the course of the musical their personal journey’s come alive through historical figures including Harry Houdini, Henry Ford, Booker T. Washington and infamous entertainer Evelyn Nesbit. These figures help offer guidance and a sense of realism to the characters; offering a purpose for each of their lives. It brings a certain depth to the play that allows it to really come to life while connected each of the characters. The musical first debuted on Broadway in 1998 and was nominated for an impressive thirteen Tony nominations. It went on to win two; Best Actress in a Musical and one for Original Score, Book and Orchestrations. The award winning songs are also featured in the revival and include the signature songs “Ragtime,” “Wheels of a Dream,” and “Make Them Hear You.” The original production also won the Drama Desk Award for Best Musical. Before heading to Broadway the first time around Ragtime was seen as a 1981 feature film starring James Cagney, Mandy Patinkin, Elizabeth McGovern and Moses Gunn. The current Broadway cast features a talented and diverse cast including Robert Petkoff, Christiane Noll, Quentin Earl Darrington and Ron Bohmer. The themes of the production are pretty heavy but through the dialog and score a though provoking tale is told. Some of the ideas explored are racial tension, violence and infidelity all entwined with a flair of New York nostalgia. The music is infectious in this production as well as the story line. Don’t miss this one. Tickets are on sale now for this historical look at an interesting time in American history.
