Reasons To Be Pretty
OFF-BROADWAY PRODUCTION TRANSFERS TO BROADWAY! Manhattan Theatre Company presents a new play about the country’s on going obsession with beauty. Reasons to be Pretty opened at the Lyceum Theatre on April 2, 2009. This new production by Neil LaBute made its successful off-Broadway run last season where it closed in July to make preparations for the Great White Way. This is the third play in LaBute’s trilogy dealing with American’s fixation on being pretty. The play focuses in a group of tight knit factory workers dealing with everyday challenges. Greg’s close social group is thrown into disarray when he happens to make a comment about a coworkers pretty face and how his own girlfriend isn’t quiet as striking. Chaos ensues when the comment gets back to said girlfriend. Lives are turned upside down, feelings are hurt and realizations are brought to the forefront. The talented cast is let by Marian Ireland as Steph. Although this is her most notable role to date she has starred in many off-Broadway productions including Nocturne, Fighting Words, Bad Jazz and Blasted. She is making her Broadway debut in this role. In the role of Kent is Steve Pasquale. He is also making his Broadway debut in this production but has had many impressive television and film roles including shows like Six Feet Under and Rescue Me. In the role of Carly is Piper Perabo. She has had memorable roles in the films Coyote Ugly, Cheaper by the Dozen and most recently Beverly Hills Chihuahua. This is her Broadway debut as well, but she has played this part in the off-Broadway production. The show created quiet the stir shortly after opening night during the April 5, 2009 matinee. At this particular performance a male audience member became so involved with the character of Steph while the actress was delivering a scorching monologue about her ex-boyfriend. The audience member became so enraged that he began shouting obscenities at her and had to be escorted from the theater. The incident was not part of the show. Apparently the dialogue must have been extremely life like to create such a reaction within the audience. The production runs two hours with one intermission and is currently on an open ended run.
