The Story Of Artist Mark Rothko Comes To Broadway!

Red on Broadway is a new two character play which opened at the Golden Theatre on April 1 , 2010. The production is a direct import from London where it enjoyed a sold-out run and brought together by the Donmar Warehouse. The play stars Alfred Molina and Eddie Redmayne who tell the story of Mark Rothko, a popular New York artist. The production has been received with some mixed reviews by respected critics ,however, many top New York critics have spoken positively on the show. Most all critics agree where this play shines are within the performances of the two actors who bring John Logan's intelligent writing to life on the stage.

The storyline of Red is telling of a two year period between Mark Rothko and his respected assistant. The two talk and debate the art they love as well as create and sell murals. Rothko was sometimes a difficult artist who committed suicide over 40 years ago. His work was often in comparison to such great historic art murals as the Sistine Chapel and shared in the same style of modern flash.

One does need to know, understand or even be a fan of modern art to enjoy or understand Red, the rhythmic language and its delivery from the actors bring the surfaces of the story to the forefront. Mr. Redmayne won an Oliver for his performance in the production and keeps the playwright's character from become a mere device of the story. As well, one does not need to know anything about Mark Rothko and his abstract expressionism to find the enjoyment within this intriguing and deeply intelligent play.

Red had a big night at the 2010 Tony's taking home 6 awards in total including Best Play, Best Direction of a Play (Michael Grandage) and Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Play (Eddie Redmayne) as well as set design, sound and lighting. The play was the biggest winner for the evening of any musical or play with winning the 6 Tony Awards from 7 nominations.

While Red was very well received in London after it opened in December the show seems to have found a true home in Manhattan. The Broadway play and its story of a difficult New York abstract expressionist artist among the hectic, noisy and chaotic street's of the city only seems to fit. The dramatic new American play runs for 90-minute and does a great job of capturing the months and years of Mark Rothko's ambition and vulnerability to create his master work on a remarkable background. Tickets for "Red" are currently on sale from the box office as well as online so don't miss your chance to catch a moving account of one of the greatest artists of the 20th century!
