Before Billy Aronson, friend and fellow playwright of Jonathan Larson suggested a modern-day, American version of Puccini’s La Boheme in 1989, Larson was a struggling artist living the bohemian life. Larson was excited with the idea and started envisioning the play in an East Village setting with the possibilities of exploring homelessness, AIDS and struggle for art. By the fall of 1992, the first draft was ready and Larson persuaded James Nicola, the Artistic Director of New York Theatre Workshop, to stage a reading of the show. The first staged reading took place in March, 1993 which got positive response. In January 1994, Larson was awarded a Richard Rodgers Development Award. He was awarded $45,000 prize, which he used to finance a two week workshop of Rent that took place in November, 1994. Impressed with the workshop presentation, two upcoming producers Jeffery Seller and Kevin McCollum agreed to stage a full production with New York Theatre Workshop in the next year. During the year 1995, Larson continued to work on the play and with the help of Lynn Thompson he sharpened the structure as well as different characters of the play. Later on once the show’s casting was done, the rehearsals started and gradually the show began to evolve. On the night of the final dress rehearsal, Larson complained of chest pain and fever. He had been experiencing these symptoms from quite a few days. He watched the show with the persisting pain and later on gave what could be his life’s last interview to New York Times. A few hours later he died. He did not live to reap the success of his hard work. The show was reviewed as a “landmark musical” and the demand for Rent Broadway tickets skyrocketed. The show was opened in the Nederlander Theatre on April 29, 1996. On Broadway, Rent got critical acclaim and also won a Tony Award for Best Musical. The show also won a Pulitzer Prize for Drama. In 2005, Rent was adapted into a motion picture featuring most of the original cast members. Rent is currently the 8th longest running musical Broadway history. How To Purchase Rent Tickets Online
