First produced in 1975, “Ritz” on Broadway built a rapport with the audience so deeply that it was an instant hit. Later, it was converted into a movie that starred Jack Warden, Rita Moreno, and Jerry Stiller. The present Broadway revival of this show has been extended by the Roundabout Theatre Company through December 9.
The director of “Ritz” is Jeo Mantello. The show stars Kevin Chamberlin and Rosie Perez. “Ritz” on Broadway started its previews on September 15. It opened on October 11 at Studio 54. Earlier, this show was scheduled to run till December 2, but now enjoys an added week of performance.
“Ritz” is labeled as a hysterical comedy, with certain degree of absurdness taking place in a bathhouse located in Manhattan. The story revolves around a man, played by Chamberlin, who is hiding from a mobster, in the so-called Turkish bath. The man gets the biggest shock of his life when he realizes, he is hiding in a gay bathhouse! He disguises himself as a big producer of Broadway to avoid being caught. How the man escapes from his catch 22 situation is fun to see!
Perez plays the role of entertainer Googie Gomez, who desires for greater venues. She throws a song-and-dance act, which includes reverence to Rodgers & Hammerstein, Lerner & Loewe, Styne, Sondheim, and others. Books Ashmanskas plays the role of a bathhouse regular Chris in the story. Brooks is known for his role in “Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me” and “The Producers.”
Ashlie Atkinson plays the role of Vivian Proclo. She is known for her role in “Fat Pig.” Patrick Kerr is “chubby chaser” Claude Perkins in the story. Patrick is famous for “Frasier.” Terrence Riordan plays the private detective Michael Brick. Terrence has smitten the audience in “Take Me Out” tour. Lenny Venito plays the furious brother-in-law Carmine Vespucci. Lenny has given a splendid performance earlier in “The Knights of Prosperity.” The other creative members of the group are David Turner, Lucas Near-Verbrugghe, Mark Leydorf, Angela Pietropinto, Seth Rudetsky, Ryan Idol, Adam Sietz, Lukas Hassel, Dillon Porter, Nick Mayo, Teddy Coluca, Matthew Montelongo, Billy Magnussen, Josh Breckenridge, Jeffrey Evan Thomas, Andrew Cooksey, and Justin Clynes. Andra Burns, famous for “In the Heights,” is standby for Perez.
Christopher Gattelli has given fine choreography with Rudetsky, who has directed the music for the show. Scott Pask has designed terrific sets and Willian Ivey Long has designed fabulous costumes. The lighting arrangement is the creativity of Jules Fisher and Peggy Eisenhauer. Sound magic is produced by Tony Meola. The awesome hair and wig that you see in the show are the brainchild of Paul Huntley. The Ritz On Broadway Tickets
