OVER THE TOP COMEDY SET FOR THE FALL!

Roundabout Theatre Company will begin its 2007/2008 season at Studio 54 with a revival of Terrance McNally’s hysterically funny comedy, The Ritz, this October. When an unsuspecting heterosexual businessman takes refuge from a homicidal mobster at a gay bathhouse all sorts of confusion, innuendo and mayhem occur making for one wild ride at the theater.

This classic play takes place at a Manhattan bathhouse known as the Ritz. When businessman Gaetano Proclo needs to hide out from Carmine Vespucci, his violent mobster brother-in-law, he takes refuge at the Ritz not knowing what type of establishment it actually is. Once he realizes where he is he goes undercover and so to keep people from becoming suspicious he pretends to be a big time Broadway producer. Throughout the course of the show he encounters several unforgettable and colorful characters to say the least including third rate entertainer Googie Gomez who dreams of becoming a star. She believes that Gaetano is a famous producer who could make her dream come true and he mistakes her for a man in drag. To further complicate matters his wife discovers his hide out and obviously jumps to the wrong conclusion about her straight husband. But even more chaos occurs when Carmine finally tracks him down!

The original production first appeared on Broadway in 1975 at the Longacre Theatre and played for 398 performances. After it closed in January of 1976 it was made into a film starring the original Broadway cast; Jack Weston, Rita Moreno and Jerry Stiller. All three were nominated for a Golden Globe Award for their work in the film. In this revival Rosie Perez stars as the flamboyant Googie. She is best known for starring in such films as Do the Right Thing, Fearless and It Could Happen to You. She also choreographed all the Fly Girl performances in the comedy series In Living Color from 1990 to 1993. She made her Broadway debut in 2002 as Frankie in Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lure. She was last seen on the Great White Way in 2004 as Pooty in Reckless. The production also stars Kevin Chamberline, Brooks Ashmanskas and Lenny Venito. The play was written by Terrance McNally whose other works include Next (1969), Kiss of the Spider Woman (1992) and Lips Together, Teeth Apart a 1991 play that deals with the irrational fears that people can have toward homosexuals and AIDS victims.

The Ritz is an outrageously funny play that is sure to have audiences laughing out loud. This witty production should not be missed by anyone who is seeking a comical experience this season. This limited engagement is scheduled to close at the beginning of December so get your tickets soon!
