Scandalous tells the intriguing and controversial story of Aimee Semple McPherson. The story covers her young childhood all the way through till her mysterious death in 1944. McPherson was kidnapped and the production covers the trial of her kidnapping also. The religious aspects of her life are filled with sex, scandal and drugs. McPherson is considered one of the most interesting females in American history. She was a fearless force who became the first woman to get radio broadcast license in the United States. She soon built her own multimedia empire which included running multiple newspapers. Her celebrity fame reached the heights of Hollywood's greatest's including Charles Chaplin and William Randolph Hearst.
Originally titled "Saving Aimee" the production premiered at White Plains Performing Arts Center in October 2005. The original production starred Carolee Carmello as Aimee and Florence Lacey. The musical was then reworked for limited run at the Signature Theatre in Arlington, Virginia which opened on April 10, 2007. The revised production was directed by Eric Schaeffer and choreographed by Christopher d'Amboise again starring Carolee Carmello. The musical was again staged at the 5th Avenue Theatre in Seattle, Washington between September 30 to October 29, 2011. David Armstrong directed with once again Carolee Carmello revising her role as Aimee.
The Broadway debut with the renamed titled " Scandalous The Life and Trials of Aimee Semple McPherson " debuted on November 15, 2012 at the Neil Simon Theatre. Carolee Carmello takes on the role of Aimee Semple McPherson for the big stage. Further cast includes George Hearn playing both Aimee's father James Kennedy and a preacher Brother Bob. Ed Watts plays Aimee's husband, and Roz Ryan (5th Avenue Theatre production) is again Emma Jo. David Armstrong once again directs the musical with choreography by Lorin Laterro.
Book writer and librettist Kathie Lee Gifford collaborates her vision with David Friedman and David Pomeranz to create a high energy romp this fall. The musical has been a long time project of passion for Mrs. Gifford who has always had a fascination with Aimee McPherson since first learning of her over forty years ago. The mix of religious figures and material mixed into a musical has been a popular and successful recipe for sometime on Broadway, think The Book of Mormon, Godspell and Jesus Christ Superstar. Hopefully Kathie Lee Gifford's take on the genre can breathe some new life and find great success along the "Great White Way" this fall season.
