Alan Rickman returns in the new Seminar Broadway play. Theresa Rebeck's latest work opens at the John Golden Theatre on November 20, 2011 for a limited run closing on March 4, 2012. Rickman plays a talented and respected literary figure which takes on a class of four promising writers. The play is set as a dark and "biting" comedy and sure to turn some heads this fall.
Theresa Rebeck is an American playwright which also has gained notoriety as a television writer and novelist. Born in Kenwood, Ohio Rebeck was a nominee for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Her play "Mauritius" appeared on Broadway at the Biltmore Theatre in 2007. The work was the playwrights Broadway debut staged by Manhattan Theatre Club.
The Seminar Broadway play marks the return of Rebeck to the big stage. Bringing in the Tony Award-nominated veteran Rickman for the leading role. Rickman has appeared on Broadway in Private Lives (2002) and Les Liaisons Dangereuses (1987). Rickman is also known for his film roles, including Prof. Snape in the "Harry Potter" franchise and villain Hans Gruber of the first "Die Hard" film. His proven acting chops fit this current role on Broadway perfectly. The cast also includes Hamish Linklater, Lily Rabe, Jerry O'Connell and Hettienne Park. Obie Award winner Sam Gold makes is Broadway directorial debut.
Seminar is an interesting addition to the fall line-up of new plays. The play has witty dialogue, wonderful acting and is intelligently written. It is sure to gain an audience throughout it's limited-engagement along the Great White Way. Competition will be tough running through the holiday shows but for anyone looking for a new play providing solid entertainment in a slightly off-beat way seminar is certainly worth a look.
