Shrek, the green monster, is now to be seen on Broadway in a lavish musical version of the hit animated movie, Shrek, the first of the triology by DreamWorks. Based on the 1990 book by William Steg and the 2001 Oscar-winning animated film by Hollywood-based DreamWorks, Shrek on Broadway presents a unique, fairy-tale world and an emotionally driven story of an ogre who finds both love and friendship.

The Musical

Shrek made its theatrical debut in Seattle and is currently playing at Broadway. This breathtaking musical outlines the story of a swamp-dwelling ogre Shrek who sets out to rescue Princess Fiona so that she can marry the evil Lord Farquaad. Accompanying Shrek on his adventures is a donkey. While the role of Shrek has been played by Tony Award nominee Brian D’Arcy James, Tony award wineer Sutton Foster plays the part of Princess Fiona. Tony Award nominees Christopher Sieber and John Tartaglia act the roles of Lord Farquaad and Pinocchio respectively. Daniel Breaker, also a Tony award nominee, plays the role of the Donkey in this musical. While all the cast remained same in the Seattle and the New York versions of the musical, the donkey’s part was enacted by Chester Gregory II in Seattle.

The show by DreamWorks Theatricals and Neal Street Productions, Ltd opened at the Broadway Theatre on December 14 and has been appreciated by all. Receiving warm reviews for the grand entertainment it offers, the show has been scripted by playwright David Lindsay-Abaire who has earlier written plays such as “Fuddy Meers” and “Kimberly Akimbo.”

Some other actors in the play include Cameron Adams, Haven Burton, Jennifer Cody, Bobby Daye, Ryan Duncan, Sarah Jane Everman, Aymee Garcia, Leah Greenhous, Justin Gree, Greg Reuter, Rachel Resheff, Dennis Stowe and David F M Vaughn. The musical has been choreographed by newcomer Josh Prince and Tim Weil is the music director of the show.

Told in a stop and go manner, the play is hilarious and theatrical. The show’s colorful costumes and excellent sets are very attractive and lively. If you too want to watch this great musical directed by Tony-Award nominated director Jason Moore, get your tickets for Shrek on Broadway, today.

Shrek on Broadway also boasts of pop-flavored melodies written by music composer Jeanine Tesori. The beautiful songs include “Travel Song” apart from a duet sung by Shrek and Fiona and called “I Got You Beat.” “Let Your Freak Frag Fly,” is another song that forms part of the musical that aims to convey the message that it is not the outer body but the inner soul which matters. Veteran costume and scenic designer Tim Hatley has done a wonderful task in turning the boyishly handsome James into the green ogre Shrek.

Do you wish to be a part of this adventurous journey by an ogre, donkey and see several of your favorite characters from the fairytales and the rhymes including Pinocchio, the Three Little Pigs, Humpty Dumpty, and Peter Pan? If yes, get your tickets for Shrek on Broadway, today.
