Shrek The Musical
EVERYONE’S FAVORITE OGRE COMES TO BROADWAY! Just in time for the holiday season comes this all new musical version of the beloved movie. On November 8, 2008 Shrek the Musical will begin previews at the Broadway Theatre with an official opening date scheduled for December 14, 2008. Based on the popular 1990 book by William Steig and the hit Dreamworks film watch all of the fairytale creatures come to life right before your eyes including Shrek, Donkey, Princess Fiona and the whole gang from the land of “Far, Far Away”. The production tells the story of a misunderstood Ogre who learns that love and friendship are his for the taking if he wants them. The journey begins when Shrek and Donkey set out on an adventure to rescue Princess Fiona from high atop a tower guarded by a fire breathing dragon. Along the way they meet some very interesting characters to say the least but in the end will the sour ogre find true love? The show adoringly spoofs several Broadway productions including A Chorus Line, The Lion King and 42nd Street. It is great entertainment the entire family can enjoy. The show played a thriving pre-Broadway run in Seattle at the 5th Avenue Theatre this past summer and given the stories previous successes it is one of the year’s most anticipated New York arrivals. The story and the characters have been featured in three films and a holiday special and the first movie won an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. The show is a fun, familiar story that will dazzle children and adults alike! Bringing the title character to life on stage is Tony nominated actor Brian d’Arcy James. He has starred in several Broadway productions including Sweet Smell of Success, The Apple Tree, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Carousel. He was also featured in the national tour of Les Miz. In the role of Princess Fiona is Tony Award winning actress Sutton Foster who most recently played Inga in the original cast of Young Frankenstein. She won the 2002 Tony award for her portrayal of Millie in Throughly Modern Millie. In the role of Donkey is Tony nominated actor Daniel Breaker who is known for acting in many Shakespearean productions. He most recently starred in last years smash hit Passing Strange for which he was nominated for the Tony. Shrek the Musical is a can’t miss production that parents and children can enjoy together. It is an experience your kids will never forget especially the first time they see Shrek appear on the stage.
