The Sister Act Broadway musical will open this Spring following a successful run for Stage Entertainment productions on London's West End in 2009. Following a seemingly new trend along the Great White Way of religious comedies and satire (The Book Of Mormon) "Sister Act" is being well received with little controversy. The stage show is adapted from the screenplay which produced the hit comedy film of the same name in 1992 starring Whoopi Goldberg. Mrs. Goldberg has left her role as Mother Superior to be part of the production of the musical. Sister Act Broadway is opening at the Broadway Theatre on April 20, 2011 to begin it's open-ended run.

Sister Act is set during 1977 - 1978 in Philadelphia. The story focuses on Deloris Van Cartier. A night club performer involved with a gangster named Curtis Shank. Deloris believes Shank will help further her career and introduce her to music producers. She soon realizes her dreams of stardom and relationship with Shank are not working out as planned. Deloris decides to leave the city of Philadelphia to pursue her dreams on her own. While going to break it off with Shank, she witnesses him and his gang made up of nephew TJ, Bones, and Dinero commits a murder on someone they believe ratted on them. Full of fear for what she just witnessed Deloris makes a run for it while Shank and his crew make it a mission to find her. She can find trust in an old friend who is a policeman named Eddie. He decides that she must join a witness protection program and feels her safest "hiding" spot would be a convent going by the name of The Holy Order of the Little Sisters of Our Mother of Perpetual Faith.

While in the Covent Deloris is frustrated to learn all connections to the outside world are cut off. The former nightclub performer can no longer smoke, drink or wear her flashy outfits. Deloris finds solace in the nun's choir and begins to work on their singing. Her work eventually leads to a full circle with the suffering group of singers and begins to bring in an audience, more donations and media attention. Meanwhile Shank and his gang of goons continue with the order to locate and kill Deloris while Shank ups the price tag. She develops a relationship with Sister Mary Robert, who wants to run away with her and Mother Superior realizes that she and Deloris are not so different after all.

Sister Act Broadway musical received a mix of reviews, including many positive ones. The strongest praise comes from its fun and energetic score, which include original songs from songwriter Alan Menken and lyricist Glenn Slater. The two are able to mix together a sound reminiscent of Motown, disco, funk and soul to the stage. The successful Broadway creative duo (Little Mermaid) can mix up the tempos and bring the mood of the story to life. Menken also is credited with the songwriting for "Little Shop of Horrors", and "Beauty and the Beast." The musical, furthermore, boasts a talented cast, including newcomer Patina Miller in the leading role of singer Deloris Van Cartier.

The new Sister Act Broadway musical is a fun and glossy production. It nestles itself into the "feel-good" entertainment category. Unlike its spring rival "The Book Of Mormon" it does not contain the profanity and vulgarity making it more appropriate for families or those who may be easily offended. Songs include "Take Me To Heaven ," "Fabulous, Baby!," "Raise Your Voice," and the title song "Sister Act." Sister Act is a wonderful new musical for Broadway this spring. A show that is irresistibly entertaining! You can view our great selection of Sister Act Broadway tickets online by clicking the link.
