Whoopi Goldberg Produces "Sister Act" for The Broadway Stage!

Sister Act tickets are now on sale for the new Broadway musical adapted from the 1992 film. The stage production was originally adapted for the West End which began running in 2006. The show is currently playing at the Broadway Theatre under the direction of Jerry Zaks. The official opening was on April 20, 2011, with previews beginning March 24, 2011. Sister Act is produced by Stage Entertainment and Whoopi Goldberg.

The Story

The 1992 film starred Whoopi Goldberg as the wannabe-nightclub singer Deloris Van Cartier. Sister Act Broadway stars newcomer Patina Miller in the role which she plays to perfection. While Whoopi steps out of acting role to produce the show the stage adaptation stays true to the original film. The story of a nightclub singer inadvertently witnesses a murder by her crime boss lover and escapes to a convent to hide. The conventional nuns come alive as she teaches them razzle-dazzle and rhythm to memorable songs. She in turn grasps the importance of sisterhood and selflessness.

Sister Act Broadway is a fun giggly musical which is pulled off perfectly on the big stage. The production is filled with wonderful original show tunes covering a variety of entertaining styles such as Motown and Funk and Disco. Songwriter Alan Menken and lyricist Glenn Slater does a fantastic job of mixing up the tempos to provide the show with a unique and exciting feel. Songs include "Yeah, I'm fabulous, baby!" , Take Me to Heaven" and "Shake it like you're Mary Magdalene". The Broadway show cuts out two songs from the London production, including the controversial and raunchy "Do the Sacred Mass," which was replaced with "Haven't Got a Prayer" sung by Clark.

The set designs for Sister Act Broadway are done by Klara Zieglerova. The many different scene's whiz about the stage, including a church, convent dining room, bar, stained glass panel, a huge statue of Mary and a police station. Anthony Van Laast adds great humor to the show through his creative use of choreography. The costume design of Lez Brotherston helps add the finishing touches by taking the bland black and white nun's uniforms and adding sparkles and rhinestones. These three stage designers blend together to bring Sister Act Broadway to full life on the stage.

Sister Act tickets follows a spring Broadway box office trend of "religious satire" alongside the new musical "The Book Of Mormon. While it may seem Broadway is taking a liking to jokes at the religion's expense both shows do nothing of the sort. Sister Act, as well as The Book Of Mormon, tell a sweet story which is steeped in the belief while exposing perhaps some of the silly facets of faith. The new Sister Act Broadway musical is simply divine and a show sure to entertain all audiences that venture through the gates of the Broadway Theatre this spring.
