Have you seen “South Pacific” on Broadway? If not, then you’re missing one of the most fantastic war tales of Broadway! The show depicts the lives of people living in Polynesian Island and military men and nurses during the time of World War II.

South Pacific, A War Tale On Stage

The story is about two couples. Nellie is a US Navy nurse. She falls in love with Emile, the owner of local plantation. The other couple is Lt. Joe Cable and a young local Liat. The love of both the couples faces threat due to the cruelties of war as well as their own prejudices. The challenge that lies ahead of them is to resolve their own differences and face the consequences of war before they can commit to one another.

South Pacific Broadway is a musical regarded as the topmost musical of the industry. Its songs like "Some Enchanted Evening," "Younger than Springtime," and "Bali Ha'i" have become classics! Richard Rodgers is behind such fabulous musical composition. The lyrics that have conquered the hearts of audience are the creative products of Oscar Hammerstein II. He has co-authored the book with the writer Joshua Logan.

James A. Michener has written the original book titled “Tales of the South Pacific.” The musical is inspired by two short stories taken from this book, which had bagged a Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1948. The musical, itself, won a Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1950.

This Pulitzer winning musical is now in your city! It opened at Vivian Beamont Theater on April 4, 2008. Before that, it was shown at Broadway Theater in the year 1953. Here, it ran continuously for five years and gave a whopping 1,925 performances! It was first shown at the Majestic Theater in the year 1949. Do you know that “South Pacific” is the fifth longest running Broadway show?

In the year 2005, a live presentation of this show’s concert version was held at the Carnegie Hall. The concert was cut down to duration of two hours. But, it had all the songs as well as the whole music score. The concert version has Reba McEntire playing Nellie, Brain Stokes as Emile, Lillias White in the role of Bloody Mary, and the talented Alec Baldwin as Luther Billis. The concert featured a complete supporting star cast as well as the original orchestrations by Robert Russell Bennett.

The original star cast of South Pacific Broadway show included Mary Martin playing the role of Nellie Forbush and Ezio Pinza in the role of Emile de Becque. The audience could also see the talented skills of Betta St. John and Juanita Hall in the show.

The current version of the show has Kelli O’Hara in the role of Nellie and Mathew Morrison in the role of Lt. Joe Cable. You must not miss their performances, as both the artists are admired stars of Broadway.
