Speed the Plow Broadway premiered at the Royale Theater on May 3, 1988 in a production by the Lincoln Center Theater. The play closed on December 31, 2008 with around 279 shows. The cast featured were Joe Mantegna (Gould), Ron Silver (Fox) and Madonna as Karen. The show was nominated for the best play award and for the best direction. Silver won the best actor award. The show has been performed many times in regional theaters and in 2006 saw a comeback in Los Angeles where Alicia Silverstone played Karen.

David has written several successful plays. His trademark in his movies is his fast delivery of dialogues. In this play he throws some light on the behavior and nature of Hollywood and the movie world. David has been into production since 1980s. The title for the play has been picked from an old English phrase which is used to deliver good luck with swift plowing. Critics feel that David has compared the movie to the fast paced and profit making intentions in Hollywood.

Speed the Plow Broadway was a huge success even before the opening night owing to the role of the temporary secretary, Karen being played by the pop star and music icon Madonna. There was even a huge sale of tickets with advanced tickets selling for over $1 million. The play as per reviews is found to have intricate comedy and cutting satire about making films in Hollywood. Producer Bobby Gould made this action flick play which is sure to be a blockbuster.

About The Play

The experience of the play is breathtaking. Speed the plow Broadway is directed by Neil Pepe who has been the artistic director of the Atlantic Theater Company since 1992. He has brought some fresh resonance to the play. The play is short, running for 80 minutes without any intermission.

Fox is an ambitious aggressive Hollywood producer who seeks and settles for a deal with his buddy. His buddy for the last 11 years, Bobby Gould is the new production head at a major Hollywood studio. The first scene begins with Fox trying to convince Bobby on a package deal that he has negotiated. The deal requires the go ahead within 24 hours. The twist in the plot is when the temporary secretary Karen walks into their world. The men gamble over Karen and bet on who is going to get first in bed with her. Behind the gamble are Karen’s motives to start her own movie production using the men as her pawns.

Critics have given good reviews for Speed the Plow Broadway show. David has won the Pulitzer award for drama over the years since 1984 play Glengarry Glenn Ross which is also about men in their business world. Some critics have felt that it is just a variation of David’s business drama stories while some have felt there was hidden meaning to this seemingly light play about two Hollywood producers wanting a big break in their lives. Tickets for the show can be purchased online in advance or even across the counter.
