Speed The Plow
DAVID MAMET REVIVAL SET TO TAKE THE STAGE!A well known cast is set to take the stage at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre for the 20th Anniversary revival of David Mamet’s dark comedy Speed-the-Plow. This satire of the film industry is set for previews on October 3, 2008 and is scheduled for an official start date of October 23, 2008. This play is said to be one of Mamet’s most popular works. The story focuses on two film producers battling it out over the next big hit. Bobby Gould and Charlie Fox are two Hollywood executive hotshots who have made it up from the mailroom together and have been through it all climbing to the top. They run into some trouble when Charlie brings Bobby a can’t miss hit that Bobby is all set to go for until the beautiful new temp at the office inserts herself in the middle of their friendship and their thought process. Can this partnership survive a woman? The original production opened on Broadway in 1988 and starred Joe Mantegna, Ron Silver and Madonna. Pulitzer Prize winning author Mamet received a Tony nomination for the play the first time around. There was also a recent West End revival starring Kevin Spacey and Jeff Goldblum as the two producers/friends. The current production stars two time Emmy award winner Jeremy Piven as Bobby. Piven is best known for his Emmy award winning portrayal of Ari Gold on the popular HBO series Entourage. This play marks his Broadway debut. In the role of Charlie is the popular Broadway actor and three time Tony award nominee Raul Esparza. He has starred in such productions as Taboo, Company and most recently The Homecoming in 2007 for which he was nominated for a Tony award. Making her Broadway debut in the role of Karen is television actress Elizabeth Moss. She is best known for her roles in The West Wing and AMC’s Mad Men. This trio makes for a strong and interesting ensemble to say the least. Speed-the-Plow is a fascinating satire of the Hollywood film set that includes portrayals of sexy movie stars, greed and the constant need for power and ambition. The storyline and the casting perfection makes this production a “must see”. Speed The Plow tickets are on sale now for this limited engagement that is scheduled to end its run on February 22, 2009.
