INNOVATIVE NEW MUSICAL AWAKENS BROADWAY!

This thrilling rock musical opened on Broadway at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre in December of 2006 to positive reviews. John Heilpern of The New York Observer boasts, “A miracle that must be seen to be believed. The best new musical in a generation!” and Charles Isherwood of The New York Times declares, “Broadway may never be the same!” The production is based on the 1891 play by Frank Wedekind and is basically about young people surviving their sexual awakening. Wedekind’s work was so controversial that it was banned from the stage for its depiction of suicide, abortion and incest, and not performed in its entirety in English for almost 100 years. The subject matter is hardly shocking in today’s society, but the plays main message still holds true; adults must educate teens about sex to avoid tragic outcomes.

Spring Awakening is set in Germany in the late 1800’s and centers around the intelligent Melchior, his disturbed friend Moritz and Wendla, a beautiful young girl on the verge of becoming a woman. As Melchior and Wendla are struggling with puberty and the mysteries of the human body they find their way into each others arms. Eventually nature takes its course and the young lovers find that they are going to have a baby. In the original play that act is a rape, but in the Broadway production it is more of a seduction, either way the results of their actions must be addressed.

The score is that of a rock musical. The songs are cutting edge and not at all what we are used to hearing from a Broadway musical. The music was written by singer/songwriter Duncan Sheik who is best known for his 1996 hit “Barely Breathing” and the lyrics are by Steven Sater. The songs spotlight teen friendships, love and the need to explore adolescence, hormones and budding sexuality. What makes this show so unique is that it is a period drama blended with contemporary music. The dialogue and the costumes may be from 1891, but the music reflects today’s sounds. There is an exciting vibe throughout the score that mirrors the daring theme of the play.

The show gets its energetic mood from the fresh, young cast who are all mainly new to Broadway. There is almost an innocence in the cast that reflects the innocence of their characters. Spring Awakening is a passionate tale of teen angst, and younger audiences can relate to this story and music as those before them did with Rent a decade ago. While the teenagers of today may be more evolved and educated as those being portrayed in this production the topics being discussed are still both timeless and universal. This show is definitely a different take on what a Broadway musical can be.

Spring Awakening Broadway tickets are selling on average at around $78.00 with the premium seats costing around $250.00. The theater holds 9,810 seats and sells out around 8,000 on average each show time. For more Spring Awakening Broadway tickets information use the links and resources on this page.
