PULITZER PRIZE WINNING PLAY RETURNS TO BROADWAY!

This award-winning Stephen Sondheim musical will begin previews on January 18, 2008 with an official start date of February 21, 2008 at Studio 54. This revival was first inspired by the George Seurat painting “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte” and plays an integral role throughout the production. Sunday in the Park with George is set in two acts that take place over 100 years apart.

The first act of this musical fantasy begins in 1884 as the painting comes to life in a time where for Georges art comes before everything else including love. The second half of the production takes place in 1980’s New York where Georges’ great-grandson is searching for some kind of inspiration in the world of contemporary art. The production not only celebrates the art of creation but the creation of art as well.

The production premiered on Broadway in 1984 at the Booth Theatre and starred Mandy Patinkin and Bernadette Peters. It went on to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1985 and twenty years later the production opened on the West End and won five Olivier Awards including Outstanding Musical Production. The music and lyrics were written by legendary stage composer Stephen Sondheim who is one of the few people in the industry to have ever won an Academy Award, seven Tony Awards (more then any other composer), multiple Grammy Awards and a Pulitzer Prize. He is probably best known for writing the scores for Company, Sweeny Todd and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. He has also written the lyrics for such classic American musicals as Gypsy and West Side Story.

The current cast stars the two leads from the London production: Daniel Evans as George and Jenna Russell as Dot and Marie. Evans is best known for his award-winning portrayals of Charley in Merrily We Roll Along and George in the London production of Sunday in the Park with George. He made his Broadway debut in the 1996 production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Russell received an Olivier Award for her portrayals as Dot and Marie and was nominated for an Olivier Award for her role as Sarah in the 2005 revival of Guys and Dolls at the Piccadilly Theatre in London. This show will mark her Broadway debut.

This whimsical show is sure to have people talking because it seems to be a hit each time it takes to the stage. The musical has an award-winning cast and an outstanding score and story. It runs a full two hours and forty minutes with one intermission and tickets are on sale now. Don’t miss your chance to see why critics are raving about this fantastic show!
