That Championship Season Broadway stars two fabulous actors in Kiefer Sutherland and Jason Patric to deliver a powerful story on stage. Most can remember the two from their roles in the popular cult hit movie "The Lost Boys." The play was written by American playwright Jason Miller. It made an off-Broadway debut at the Estelle Newman Theatre on May 2, 1972 directed by A.J. Antoon. Critics instantly began praising the work, and it went onto winning the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. That Championship Season Broadway transfer occurred in September 1972. The play ran at the Booth Theatre for 844 performances until closing in April 21, 1974. In 1982 Mr. Miller wrote and directed a movie adaptation with success. The latest incarnation marks the first Broadway revival. Critics are once again praising the work of the ensemble cast under the direction of Gregory Mosher ( “A View from the Bridge”).
That Championship Season Broadway play focuses on the friendship between high school basketball starting line-up and their coach. Set in 1972 in the small area of Scranton, Pennsylvania. Some twenty years later the now middle-aged men meet at the house of the coach who drove them to a state championship. The coach, Mr. Cox, is suffering from a terminal disease. The four men visit to reflect on their lives and look for some guidance from their mentor. Each of the men's lives had not turned out like they had planned. Sutherland character has become an embittered junior high school principal and Mr. Patric as an alcoholic writer. Through the experience, the men begin to realize perhaps the coach was not the hero. They once envisioned him as. The inspired pep talks suddenly seem to hallow, and certain traits become exposed such as bigotry and fraud.
That Championship Season Broadway may sound like an inspirational sports story, but it cuts deep. It is a character study, a coming of age story which resonates. There are plenty of moments of witty humor to keep the story from becoming 'dark." The dialogue and characters are the strength of the play and the rival stays on top of it. The revival will also mark the Broadway debut Mr. Sutherland which alongside Mr. Patric play brothers James and Tom Daley. Mr. Patric is noted as recruiting Sutherland for the role.
