The production is a musical comedy about a competition where contestants, usually children compete – but in this case six youth in the throes of puberty, are asked to spell English words. The musical teaches young people that winning is not everything and that losing does not mean you are a loser.

This musical has its roots in C-R-E-P-U-S-C-U-L-E, an original play by a New-York-based improvisational comedy troupe - The Farm. On the suggestion of the playwright Wendy Wasserstein, William Finn went to work on the play with the help of his former student - Rachel Sheinkin, and the creator of C-R-E-P-U-S-C-U-L-E - Rebecca Feldman, to convert it into a full length musical. The competition is supposed to be held in a fictional place – Putnam County and tells the story of a fictional spelling bee -

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee was developed and had its first workshop during the winter of 2004 at the Barrington Stage Company in Sheffield, Massachusetts. The musical moved to the Off-Broadway theater – the Second Stage Theatre – where all the shows were completely sold out, broke all Second Stage Theatre records, and the performances had to be extended. The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee previewed on Broadway on April 15, 2006 and officially opened on May 2, 2006 at Circle In The Square.

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee opened to rave reviews on Broadway and won two 2005 Tony Awards: for Best Book of a Musical - Rachel Sheinkin, and Best Featured Actor in a musical - Dan Fogler.

The Twist In The Show

There is an unusual twist in the show everytime. Each performance has real audience members, 4 in number, who are invited to compete in the contest along side the 6 performers, as guest spellers. Periodically, there are ‘adult nights’ at The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee performances – also known as the “Parent-Teacher Conferences,” and the members of the audience are required to be 17 years of age, and above. These performances are replete with curses and have sexual references.

The Venue

The Circle In The Square is a small 680-seat auditorium located under the Paramount Pictures building. Found in 1951, it is considered to be one of the oldest producing theaters of its time in New York.

Usually configured as the Thrust stage, the stage in Circle In The Square Theater can be configured in the theater-in-the-round configuration, too.
