AWARD WINNING ACTRESS TO STAR IN REVIVAL!

The Manhattan Theatre Club presents a reworking of Richard Greenberg’s breakout play The American Plan. The play starring Tony award and Academy Award winning actress Mercedes Ruehl opened on January 22, 2009 at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre. This intense production chronicles the turbulent relationship of a troubled young girl and her overbearing mother.

The story takes place in the early 1960’s where Lili Adler and her mother Eva spend their summer vacationing across the lake from a thriving Catskills resort. Lili finds herself falling in love with a handsome stranger but the fragile Lili fears that once her domineering mother finds out about the relationship she will lose her chance at happiness and not be able to escape her controlling ways. As Lili finds herself falling deeper in love with Nick her mother finds out a secret from his past that makes him an unsuitable match for her daughter. Will Eva ruin Lili’s chance at happiness before she is able to begin this new life?

The production was first produced on Broadway in the early 1990’s and was written by Tony award winning playwright Richard Greenberg. He won the Tony for his 2003 play Take Me Out and is the author of twenty-five other plays including The Injured Party and Three Days of Rain which was a Pulitzer Prize finalist. The current production stars the award winning and extremely talented Ruehl. She is best known for her Tony award winning performance in the 1991 production of Lost in Yonkers and her Academy Award winning role on The Fisher King that same year. She has also appeared in Fraiser and such films as Married to the Mob and Crimes and Misdemeanors. In the role of the delicate Lili is Lily Rabe who made her Broadway debuet in the memorable role of Annelle in the 2005 production of Steel Magnolias. The play also stars Kieran Campion and Benjamin Eakeley.

The American Plan is a powerful drama that will leave you wanting more. The play is well written and displays a more than capable ensemble. The American Plan tickets are on sale now for this strictly limited engagement that is set to close on March 8, 2009.
