Gore Vidal’s The Best Man Broadway revival is ready for a star studded opening night at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre. The production has been running previews since March 6, 2012 and scheduled for an official opening on April 1. The political melodrama is set for a limited run; final curtain will be on June 1. The play comes on time for the election year with a story of a ruthless battle for the 1960 Presidency. American playwright Gore Vidal was born on October 23, 1923. Among his writing talents, he has consistently been a political activist. Vidal has even run for a government office twice and unfailingly was a strong critic of governmental policies. His 1948 work "The City and the Pillar," caused controversy and outrage with its homosexuality, the first American novel to cover such content.
The debut of The Best Man Broadway was at the Morosco Theatre on March 31, 1960. Vidal's work was admired with six Tony Awards nominations, including Best Play. The debut production ran for 520 performances before final curtain on July 8, 1961. The first Broadway revival was staged in September of 2000 at the Virginia Theatre closing after 121 performances. Vidal later reworked his writing and adapted it into a screenplay. The film of the same title was released in 1964.
The story of The Best Man Broadway tells of the cut-throat race for Presidency at the 1960 Philadelphia convention. The plot centers around two main characters, the liberal and likable William Russell running against the bigoted Joseph Cantwell. The audience is treated into the realism as the two candidates fight hard to win their parties nominations. The Best Man -provides an inside glimpse of the dirt digging, scandals and double dealings behind the scenes of a primary.
