Vidal also adapted his work into a screenplay for the 1964 film of the same name. The plot of "The Best Man,' centers around the 1960 political convention in Philadelphia. The story is about five candidates but two front-runners, William Russell as an ethical liberal Presidential candidate running against the unscrupulous and bigoted Joseph Cantwell. Whomever gets the nod will likely go on to be President of the United States. All candidates on board have plenty of dirt on each other and are ready and willing to expose it in order to keep their dreams alive.
