The Book Of Mormon Broadway show is possibly the funniest show ever staged on The Great White Way. The creators of Comedy Centrals hit animated series "South Park" have teamed up with Robert Lopez of "Avenue Q," to deliver a unique musical with non-stop laughs. The Book Of Mormon has officially opened at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre after previews ran from February 24, 2011. For the popular "South Park" duo, this is Trey Parker and Matt Stone's Broadway debut. A debut filled with controversy and heavy media attention but making converts of almost all have seen the production.

The production got off the ground when Stone and Parker went to see a performance of "Avenue Q." The two met Lopez and began talking about the concept of a musical based on Mormonism. Quickly, the idea took off creatively between the three. The goal to create an over -the-top Broadway musical with a comedic heart seems to have been a recipe for success.

The Book Of Mormon Broadway musical tells the story of Elder Cunningham (Josh Gad) and Elder Price (Andrew Rannells), two Mormon missionaries sent to Ugandan. The two characters could not be more different, both with their own irritating traits. The missionaries quickly discover the horrendous conditions the villagers are forced to live in. The people of the native land have all turned their backs on God and all previous missionaries have failed to deliver the "word." Price takes on the challenge but the villagers are less than impressed and strongly turned off by his arrogance. Price soon throws in the towel wanting to leave Ugandan and head to Florida. Cunningham decides that giving up is no solution and begins to rework their religious text with what he knows as well as some fabricated stories to get the villagers on board. Through the use of adding characters from Star Wars and The Lord of the Rings into his teachings the villagers believe in Cunningham and become baptized into the Mormon faith. Price and Cunningham learn that sometimes the importance of religion is not the text itself but its ability to help people who are suffering.

The Book Of Mormon Broadway musical is directed by Directed by Parker and Casey Nicholaw. The production features an original book and score by Parker, Stone and Lopez. The cast includes Andrew Rannells, Josh Gad, Michael Potts, Nikki M. James, Elder McKinley and Rory O'Malley. Scott Pask does a wonderful job with the set designs as does Ann Roth with the costumes. Further credits include choreography by Casey Nicholaw, lighting by Brian MacDevitt, sound by Brian Ronan and orchestrations by Larry Hochman.

Overall critical response has all been positive. The musical is praised for its outlandish yet a hilarious plot, songs which are inspired by contemporary Broadway styles and crass writing, which are full of good intentions. For fans of Trey and Matt's comedic style the show is going to over-deliver in every way. For those looking for a different style of musical comedy and are able to handle the material you are sure to get plenty of side-splitting laughs.
