The Country Girl
OSCAR WINNERS FREEMAN AND MCDORMAND COME TO BROADWAY!
An awarding winning cast comes to Broadway in the revival of The Country Girl. The play, written by Clifford Odet, is scheduled for previews on April 3, 2008 at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre with an official start date of April 27, 2008. The cast is led by Academy Award winners Morgan Freeman and Frances McDormand and also stars Tony nominated actor Peter Gallagher.
The play centers on the title character Georgie the longtime suffering wife of Frank. Although once a great theater star Frank now finds himself out of work and down on his luck until “big shot” director Bernie Dodd offers him the comeback role of a lifetime. But, will his longtime problem with alcohol destroy his chances? Bernie soon discovers that the bottle may not be Franks only problem as Georgie also seems to be contributing to his downward spiral.
The play first appeared on Broadway in 1950 and was made into a film in 1954 starring Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly and William Holden. The movie won two Academy Awards including Best Actress for Kelly. The current production is the first major mounting in thirty years. It is being directed by eight time Tony award winner Mike Nicholas and features an all-star ensemble. In the role of Frank is acclaimed actor Freeman who has enjoyed a lengthy stage and film career but is probably best known for his unforgettable roles in The Shawshank Redemption, Driving Miss Daisy and Million Dollar Baby for which he won an Academy Award. He was last seen on Broadway in the 1988 production of The Gospel at Colonus. He has most recently starred opposite Jack Nicholson in the box office hit The Bucket List. McDormand who stars in the title role is probably best known for her 1996 Academy Award winning role in Fargo but has appeared in many television shows and films including Something’s Gotta Give and Almost Famous. She mad her Broadway debut in the 1984 production of Awake and Sing! Rounding out the cast in the role of Bernie is David Gallagher. A well- known face to both films and stage he made his Broadway debut in the 1977 production of Hair and has also appeared in Grease and Guys and Dolls. He is probably best known for his role as Sandy Cohen in the popular night time drama The O.C.
The Country Girl is on a limited run and is scheduled to close on July 20, 2008. This is a great opportunity to see a classic “Hollywood” type story with a talented and seasoned cast. Don’t miss your chance to see this fantastic production. Get your tickets today!
