The Philanthropist on Broadway
MATTHEW BRODERICK RETURNS TO THE STAGE! The Roundabout Theatre Company presents The Philanthropist which opened on April 26, 2009 at the American Airlines Theatre. The production takes a comedic look at the sometimes ridiculous insular lives of college intellects. The play stars two-time Tony Award winner and stage favorite Broderick. It was written by Award winning playwright Christopher Hampton in response to Moliere’s The Misanthrope. The play is set at an elite British university and centers on Phillip, a professor who is absurdly removed from all the political turmoil that surrounds him including the assassination of the prime minister and his cabinet. It’s a comedic look into the sometimes illogical lives of college academics. Phillip is too nice for his own good and refuses to succumb to his colleague’s critical ways, but by not conforming he could ruin his prestigious career. This is a satirical look at the way academics sometimes think proving that there is a fine line between and idiot and a genius. The production stars Tony Award winner Broderick in the role of Phillip. He won Tony Awards for his roles on Brighton Beach Memoirs and How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying. He has also starred in The Music Man and The Producers opposite Nathan Lane. He has also enjoyed a notable film career including Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, The Stepford Wives, The Cable Guy and Deck the Halls. The cast also features Jonathan Cake, Anna Madeley and acclaimed television, film and theater star Steven Webber. He is best known for his long time role as Brian on the successful sitcom Wings. The play was written by three- time Tony Award and two- time Olivier Award winner Hampton. Some of his other works include The Talking Cure, Tales from Hollywood and Total Eclipse. He has also written the screenplays for Mary Reily, The Secret Agent and most recently Atonement. The Philanthropist features a talented, well rounded cast that delivers the fun and witty dialogue with impeccable timing. The play is on a strictly limited engagement and is scheduled to close on June 28, 2009. Don’t miss your chance to catch Broderick on the Broadway stage in this clever, intellectual comedy.
