The Road To Mecca play heads to Broadway this winter. The intriguing dramatic work officially opens on January 17, 2012 for a limited run which is scheduled to close on March 4, 2012. The work of South Africa's playwright Athol Fugard has been gaining attention with is opening announced on the big stage. Fugard's work has always been influenced by South African culture and politics. The Road To Mecca tells the story of an aging widow being pulled in different directions, both believing they are working for her best interests. The production is playing at the American Airlines Theatre and well worth checking out.
The Road To Mecca Broadway production stars a cast, including Rosemary Harris, Jim Dale and Carla Gugino. Fugard's story was inspired by the earlier work of Helen Martins. The play first debuted at the National Theatre in London before transferring to Spoleto Festival USA in 1987. The production included the acting of Athol Fugard as the Rev. Marius Byleveld. In 1988, Fugard's work won the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best Foreign Play. In 1992, Peter Goldsmid wrote a film adaptation for the big screen. The film was co-directed with Fugard, whom once again took on the role of Rev. Marius Byleveld. The cat also included Kathy Bates as Elsa Barlow, and Yvonne Bryceland as Miss Helen.
The plays for revival and Broadway premier for 2011 is brought by the renowned Roundabout Theatre Company. The Broadway production includes a cast of Rosemary Harris, Jim Dale and Carla Gugino. Premiers have been running since December 16, 2011 at the American Airlines Theatre.
The Road To Mecca Broadway play tells the story of an aging widow named Miss Helen. The eccentric widow spends her time alone in her South Africa home working on her artwork and sculptures. The local community has a difficult time understanding Miss Helen nor care for her home being transformed into a work of art. The community pastor begins working to have Miss Helen moved into a retirement home. A young teacher and friend of the eccentric widow fights for her, wanting Miss Helen to be able to work on her artwork and continue to find peace within her home after her loss.
