South African playwright Athol Fugard Brings Fresh Play To BroadwayThe Road To Mecca tickets are on sale for all performances at the American Airlines Theatre. The well renowned Roundabout Theatre Company presents the intriguing work of South African playwright Athol Fugard. The first preview began on December 17, 2011 with a warm reception. Set in South Africa, the story tells of an elderly woman who spends her time turning her home into a work of art after the death of her husband. The play is scheduled for a limited-engagement and final curtain it set for the evening of March 4, 2012. Athol Fugard was born in South Africa on June 11, 1932. The playwright, novelist, director and actor would go onto to study Philosophy and Social Anthropology at the University of Cape Town. He eventually would drop out of higher education to become a gypsy of sorts, hitchhiking with a friend to North Africa. His adventures would lead him to East Asia working aboard the steamship named the SS Graigaur. From his travels and experiences, he began writing in his spare times. In 1956, Fugard would marry Sheila Meiring, a University of Cape Town Drama School student. The couple moved to Johannesburg in 1958 where they began to learn and become involved in the injustices of apartheid. Athol Fugard's plays would take on a political tone and soon become best known for opposing the South African system of apartheid. His political impetus would also bring forth conflict with the national government. In order to avoid prosecution for his sensitive writing, he would produce and publish his works outside of North Africa. The Road To Mecca tickets first sold for performances at the National Theatre in London in 1987. The play was transferred to the Spoleto Festival USA latter that same year. Athol Fugard starred in the production as the Rev. Marius Byleveld alongside Charlotte Cornwell as Elsa Barlow and Yvonne Bryceland as Miss Helen. In 1988, his original work would win the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best Foreign Play. In 1992, Fugard's work was adapted into a film written by Peter Goldsmid. The movie once again starred Fugard as the Rev. Marius Byleveld but with Kathy Bates as Elsa Barlow, and Yvonne Bryceland as Miss Helen. The 2011 production will be the plays Broadway premier starring Rosemary Harris, Jim Dale and Carla Gugino. Fugard's work explores the life of an aging widow who spends her time transforming her home into an art form of sculptures. Miss Helen (Rosemary Harris) becomes more and more reclusive. Her local conservative valued pastor begins to take notice of Miss Helen's depression and inability to care for herself since the loss of her husband. Pastor Marius Byleveld becomes worried and determined to take her from the home and place her into a personal-care facility. Helen's good friend Elsa (Carla Gugino), a young educator from Cape Town becomes suspicious of the pastor's patriarchal traditions becomes determined to fight for Helen's right to stay in her home working on the art forms and sculptures she loves. The Road To Mecca tickets are on sale now for all performances at the American Airlines Theatre. The play will be running from January 17, 2012 (official opening night) through March 4, 2012.
