The Royal Family is a classic comic play of the year 1927, written by George. S. Kaufman and Edna Gerber. Broadway has revived this eight decades old play, while still maintaining its comic charm. The play made its debut in Selwyn Theatre of Broadway on 28th December, 1927. The show went on till October,1928, running a total of 345 shows. It is said that the Cavendish family draws its inspiration from the real-life Barrymore family consisting of Drew Barrymore and his siblings John, Lionel and Edna Barrymore. The Story
Set in the city of New York, the story of The Royal Family play is about the starry life of Cavendish family, whose three generations are theatre artists. The family consists of the family head Fanny, her daughter Julie and grand-daughter Gwen, Fanny’s Brother Bert and his wife Kitty. Their days revolve around theatrical performances and they go through scripts when not performing. There is a conflict in the family when Julie and her daughter Gwen show the desire to leave their frantic family careers and settle down in matrimony.About The Characters
While the Cavendish women of ‘The Royal Family’, Fenny, Julie and Gwen personify style and sophistication; Bert’s wife Kitty is very tastelessly and loudly decked-up. David Greenspan makes even the simplest of lines seem extremely funny.The set of ‘The Royal Family’ is beautifully designed with fine details, by John Lee Beatty. It is a multi-level set of a duplex house, where the Cavendish family resides. Catherine Zuber takes the credit for designing the costumes and Kenneth Posner has provided lighting to the Cavendish house. The three hour long play keeps the viewers tied to their seats and successfully retains their curiosity and interest.
