The Seagull Play in New York - Anton Chekhov’s great masterpiece comes to Broadway right from the Royal Court Theatre in London. This critically acclaimed drama will begin previews at the Walter Kerr Theatre on September 16, 2008 with an official opening on October 1, 2008.

Written in 1895, The Seagull is regarded as one of Anton Chekhov’s best plays. It explores the story of a dysfunctional family living of obsessions and secrets without seeing the reality in front of them. This limited engagement is scheduled to end on December 21, 2008.

A Story About Unaccomplished Dreams And Regrets

The story is set during a difficult time in Russian history. The Seagull Play in New York begins with young Konstantine’s desperate struggle to establish himself in the world as a writer. His life turns upside down on the return of his mother, a famous actress, along with her lover. Their mere presence causes a lot of upheaval, disturbing and unsettling all the other family members. The resulting tensions and growing suspicions are a test of their patience.

The story seems to mirror Shakespeare’s Hamlet in some parts. It displays the romantic entanglements and regrets of artists gathered in their summer house.

A Wonderful Star Cast

The Seagull Play in New York has very strong and varied characters. The current production has a host of great actors, who can do justice to the characters in the drama.

The play stars Academy Award nominee Kristin Scott Thomas, who is best known for her performance in films like The English Patient for which she was nominated for an Oscar and Four Weddings and a Funeral, reprising her Olivier Award winning role. Even though The Seagull Play in New York marks her debut on Broadway, she has an excellent theatre experience abroad having performed in Three Sisters and As You Desire.

Peter Sarsgaard, who was seen in many films like Kinsey, Garden State and The Skeleton Key, will star as Trigorin. He, too, will be debuting on Broadway with this play, although he has been seen in many off-Broadway productions such as Kingdom of Earth and Burn This.

The cast is supported by Mackenzie Crook, Art Malik, Carey Mulligan, and Peter Wright among others.

The Seagull is directed by Ian Rickson and the sets and costumes have been designed by Hildegard Bechtler. Peter Mumford is the lighting designer.

Chekhov’s play has been translated by playwright Christopher Hampton.
