ACCLAIMED DRAMA COMES TO BROADWAY FROM THE LONDON STAGE!
This critically acclaimed drama comes to New York City at the Walter Kerr Theatre for previews on September 16, 2008 and officially opens on October 1, 2008. The Seagull was written in 1895 by Anton Chekov and is often described as a masterpiece. The production comes to Broadway directly from the Royal Court Theatre in London and stars Kristin Thomas Scott who will reprise her Olivier winning role.
Set during a turbulent time in Russian history the story begins with young Konstantine who is desperately trying to make his way in the world as a writer. His life is turned upside down when his mother, a famous actress, returns to their summer home with her new lover. Their mere presence seems to wreak havoc and unsettle the rest of the family. Tensions arise, suspicions grow and patience is tested. In some parts of the play the audience may recognize that it seems to mirror Shakespeare’s Hamlet.
The play is made up of strong, diverse characters that help to drive the plot. The ensemble of this production does the characters great justice. The show stars Academy Award nominee Kristin Scott Thomas reprising her Olivier Award winning role of Arkadina. Scott Thomas is probably best known for her work in films like The English Patient for which she was nominated for an Oscar and Four Weddings and a Funeral. The Seagull is her Broadway debut but her theatre resume abroad is quite impressive including roles in Three Sisters and As You Desire. In the role of Trigorin is Peter Sarsgaard who has appeared several films including Kinsey, Jarhead and The Skeleton Key. He will also be making his Broadway debut but has appeared in several off-Broadway productions including Kingdom of Earth and Burn This.
This is a powerful production about unfulfilled dreams and regret. The Seagull portrays a dysfunctional family that thrives off obsession and secrets but never really seems to see what is right in front of them. This intriguing play runs two hours and forty minutes with one intermission. It is a limited engagement that is scheduled to close on December 21, 2008. So if you plan to be in the city for the fall season get your tickets soon!
