What’s Happening Broadway…Fall Edition August 2010

Summer is finally winding down, and the Broadway season is heating up. Twelve productions are scheduled to open from September to November with seven of them starting in September. What does that mean for the avid Broadway lover? Decisions, decisions, decisions!

Not only are there a variety of plays and musicals opening, but along with many of them are some pretty impressive star power, including David Hyde Pierce, James Earl Jones, Vanessa Redgrave and Patrick Stewart to name a few.

Before we get to the new arrivals, I think it’s worth mentioning that Tony Award winner Douglas Hodge along with Emmy Award winner and Tony nominee Kelsey Grammar will be extending their roles in La Cage aux Folles until February 2011. So, if you haven’t seen this musical gem, check it out soon. Also, Tony Award winner Bernadette Peters has joined the cast of A Little Night Music which reopened at the Walter Kerr Theatre. Peters took over the role from Tony Award winner Katherine Zeta-Jones.Here’s what’s up in September…

Brief Encounter - The lives and loves of three couples are played out in a station tearoom using the words and songs of Noël Coward to create a breathtaking, charmingly amusing and touching show.

La Bete - American playwright David Hirson's rollicking 1991 play is a comic tour de force about Elomire (David Hyde Pierce), a high-minded classical dramatist who loves only the theater, and Valere (Mark Rylance), a low-brow street clown who loves only himself. When the fickle princess (Joanna Lumley) decides she's grown weary of Elomire’s royal theatre troupe, he and Valere are left fighting for survival as art squares off with ego in a literary showdown for the ages.

A Life in the Theatre - An up-and-coming actor and an almost over-the-hill one engage in a power struggle that is camouflaged by their onstage and backstage relationship.

Lombardi - a new play by Academy Award winner and Steppenwolf Theater Company member Eric Simonson, is based on the best-selling biography When Pride Still Mattered: A Life of Vince Lombardi, by Pulitzer Prize-winning author David Maraniss

Mrs. Warren’s Profession - A young woman discovers that the mother who gave her such a privileged upbringing is in fact the madam of a brothel. Far from being ashamed of her profession, however, Mrs. Warren defends it as the epitome of capitalism.

The Pitmen Painters - The Pitmen Painters tells the story of a group of Ashington coal miners who, in 1934, hire a professor to teach an art appreciation evening class.

Spider-Man Turn off the Dark - Julie Taymor (The Lion King) and Bono and The Edge (of U2) bring to life the iconic superhero Spider-Man, who as high school student Peter Parker is bitten by a genetically altered spider and develops amazing powers.

Information On Theater Tickets In New York

The core of entertainment in New York City is its ‘Theater District’ – popularly known as Broadway. This is a place that is an amalgamation of cultural diversity and creative talent, unlike anywhere else. The breathtaking productions that are displayed every night have no equal anywhere else. Each year, there are more than 12 million visitors to the theaters in the Theater District. No wonder, theater tickets in New York are always at a premium, and have to be booked months in advance, to avoid disappointment.

With New York attracting visitors and tourists, as flies to mead, and every visitor wanting to enjoy at least one show on Broadway, the dearth of theater tickets in New York does not make procuring them easy. Many tourists give up after trying and failing to procure their tickets.

Info On New York Theaters

Theater tickets in New York for productions on Broadway – a term applied to theaters showing higher productions, which may involve actors from Hollywood – are very high priced and are mostly sold out in advance. Tickets for premium shows are sold out months in advance and are near impossible to purchase at the spur of the moment – as short-term visitors tend to.

Theater tickets in New York for premium Broadway productions are very high priced and are not easily available. However, you can get lucky and may be able to procure tickets known as Partial View tickets, and at very affordable prices. Partial view tickets have an obstructed view of the stage, and you may miss seeing a portion of the stage.

There are other ways of procuring theater tickets in New York . Maybe, the concierge at your hotel can help. Local New Yorkers have their own way of arranging such tickets, but they may come at a price. This may come as news to the visitors, but it may be possible to put your hands on theater tickets by simply visiting the theater and expecting some ‘no shows.’ Groups could have people dropping out at the last moment, and may have tickets, which you can pick up at face value.

Saturday nights are not good nights to expect to pick up extra tickets. Monday night may be a great night, or a matinee show on Wednesday may be a good time to expect to obtain Broadway tickets for premium shows and at affordable prices.

There are other ways of picking up theater tickets in New York for shows on Broadway, such as through re-sale forums, through eBay, and through ticket brokers. The first two are risky affairs, as you can be scammed with tickets that are not genuine. There are reliable and reputed brokers who can arrange tickets for ‘hot’ productions with premium seats. Of course, you have to pay premium prices for such tickets.

Theaters have many scalpers on the streets around them. You should stay away from such people, who are nothing but con men of the best kind. Your best bet is the reputed brokers or agencies.
