Thurgood provides you with an easy to watch 90 minute show portraying the life of a great American citizen in a very entertaining manner. The histrionics of intense drama or the entertainment of a musical may not be a part of Thurgood but according to most reviews, Laurence Fishburne’s performance as Thurgood make for a pleasurable evening.

The Gentleman

In George Stevens Jr.’s compelling new Thurgood Broadway play in New York, Fishburne illustrates the life of Thurgood Marshall who was the grandson of a slave and went on to become the first African-American Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. Thurgood is not only the remarkable story of the courage and perseverance of the man himself but also the story of the nation that he challenged with courage and later served proudly. Thurgoood Marshall who came from a childhood in the backstreets of Baltimore steadily rose to the highest seat of the Supreme Court in America. In spite of the many obstacles that Marshall had to face in his journey to the top as a Supreme Court Justice, he remained focused on his goal and positive in his approach to uphold the ideals of great country that he wanted to serve.

Reviews of the Thurgood Broadway play in New York have deemed Fishburne’s performance as “electrifying”, “brilliant” and “riveting”. Thurgood may be the right choice for those looking for a dignified play with an identifiable face and a good acting performance. Thurgood however may be considered inappropriate for children under the age of ten as strong language has been used at places in the play. Interestingly, the role of Thurgood was initially played by James Earl Jones in the year 2006 in the initial production at Westport Country Playhouse. Fishburne who is an Academy Award nominee, is also a Tony Award winner, an Emmy Award winner and a Drama Desk award winner. The recipient of a Theatre World Award as well, Fishburne brings to life the wisdom, wit and humor of one of an great American hero in the Thurgood Broadway play in New York.

Although Fishburne’s performance in the Thurgood Broadway play in New York cannot be faulted, the play deals more with the journey from court to court and less about the man behind the entire journey. The private trials and agonies of Thurgood Marshall, the man remains undisclosed and one can’t help but wish that the play revealed more about the person who was Thurgood Marshall and less about his public trials.
