LAURENCE FISHBURNE COMES TO THE STAGE IN A ONE-MAN SHOW! Award-winning actor Laurence Fishburne brings Thurgood Marshall to life on the stage in this new biographical play by George Stevens, Jr. Thurgood, based on the life of the legendary Supreme Court Justice, comes to the Booth Theatre for previews on April 12, 2008 with an official start date of April 30, 2008. This triumphant story takes the audience on one mans journey through the backstreets of Baltimore all the way up to the High Court. Thurgood is a moving tale of one man rising above to beat the odds and overcome fierce obstacles. It is a story of a civil rights pioneer who devotes his life to making his country a better place for all to reside in. The play chronicles his life from childhood in Baltimore to his service as the chief council of the NAACP for which he famously argued the historical case of Brown vs. the Board of Education in 1954 to his accomplishment of going on to become the first African American Supreme Court Justice. He was appointed to the court in 1967 and served his country with the wisdom and intelligence that contributed to shaping the United States into what it is today. He served on the court for twenty-four years maintaining a liberal record while supporting abortion rights and opposing the death penalty. Marshall died in 1993 just two years after leaving his position. The production premiered in 2006 at the Westport Country Playhouse and starred James Earl Jones and was directed by Leonard Foglia who is also directed the Broadway production. In a remarkable sole performance Fishburne takes on the role and does the material tremendous justice. Fishburne won the 1992 Tony award for his role as Sterling in August Wilson’s Two Trains Running. He received an Academy Award nomination for his phenomenal portrayal of Ike Turner in What’s Love Got to Do with It? He is also well-known for his many film credits including roles in The Matrix Trilogy, Boyz in the Hood, Mystic River and Bobby. Thurgood is a moving and powerful production and is part of American history that shouldn’t be missed. The show runs ninety minutes with no intermission which allows the dialogue to flow and the story to progress seamlessly. It is a strictly limited engagement and is scheduled to end its run on July 20, 2008. Don’t miss this opportunity to see a talented actor portray one of America’s most important and accomplished men.
