Ticket Broadway Show Mamma Mia
CELEBRATING FIVE YEARS ON BROADWAY! The feel good musical Mamma Mia! debuted on October 18, 2001 at the Winter Garden Theater where it still plays to sold out audiences. This hit musical is based on the songs of the Swedish pop music group ABBA, and the title is taken from their chart topping 1975 classic song. The show was written by British playwright Catherine Johnson. The production features twenty-two of ABBA’s biggest hits including “Dancing Queen,” “Thank You for the Music” and “Winner Takes All.” The production moves to a disco beat as the songs are brilliantly intertwined into a wonderful story of life, love and friendship. The story takes place on a fictional island in Greece where Sophie Sheridan is about to be married and would like her father to give her away. Her mother, Donna, does not like to discuss her past, so Sophie must take matters into her own hands. She secretly reads Donna’s diary and discovers that her father could be one of three men. She decides to invite all three of them to her wedding hoping that she can figure out which one of them is her dad. This journey takes her to a place she never saw coming. ABBA was the most popular group to come out of Scandinavia. They exploded on to the music scene in 1972 where they held strong for about ten years. The quartet topped worldwide charts and has sold more than 350 million records. The group still remains on radio play lists with new listeners becoming fans every day. They still continue to sell albums today. In 2002 the production was nominated for five Tony Awards including Best Actress, Best Book and Best Musical. Unfortunately it just wasn’t their year and sadly they went home empty handed. However, today the musical has its very own distinction; there are more productions of this musical playing simultaneously around the world than any other show. In 2006 to commemorate five years of sold out performances a 5th Anniversary Special Edition CD with bonus DVD recording was released. In 2008 the highly anticipated film version starring Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan was released. The film which closely followed the musicals plot was a box office hit and will soon be released to DVD. Mamma Mia! still has theatergoers out of their seats singing and dancing. During the encore “Dancing Queen,” “Mamma Mia” and “Waterloo” are played and the audience is invited and encouraged to sing along. This show offers a fun filled couple of hours that makes the viewer want to move to the beat and sing the lyrics. This performance will definitely provide the audience with a light hearted, enjoyable and interactive experience.
