POPULAR MUSICAL RETURNS TO BROADWAY AFTER FOUR DECADES! A tribe of hopeful hippies tell the story of the birth of the 60’s and 70’s cultural movement. The groundbreaking production of Hair returns to Broadway forty years after its original opening on March 31, 2009 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre. This revival is transferring from the Public Theatre where it had to extend its run three times due to the popularity of the show. The production is set in New York City during the turbulent time of the Vietnam War and chronicles a turning point in American history. It centers on a group of hippies living in the “Age of Aquarius” fighting against the U.S. involvement in the war. Many resist the draft despite the conservative views of their parents and society. It explores many themes of the hippie movement that were taking place at the time; drugs, nudity, pacifism, religion, sex and homosexuality. The original production was extremely cutting edge for the NY stage and featured a racially integrated cast with at least 1/3 of the ensemble being African American which at the time was virtually unheard of. Blacks were portraying roles as equals among the cast rather then the traditional Broadway roles like servants and slaves. Hair originally opened in April of 1968 and became the first off-Broadway show to transfer to Broadway. It can be classified as a rock musical with a book and lyrics by James Rado and Gerome Ragni (both starred in the original cast) and music by Galt MacDermont. Several of the songs not only became Top 40 hits but anthems of the anti-Vietnam war peace movement as well. The score includes the classic songs “Aquarius,” “Hair” and “Let the Sun Shine In”. The actors are bringing much experience to the characters and story. In the role of Claude is Gavin Creel who was Tony nominated for his Broadway debut in the 2002 production of Thoroughly Modern Millie. Will Swenson as Berger gained positive attention when he performed this role in last years off-Broadway run. He has also had roles in 110 in the Shade and Lestat on Broadway. In the role of Sheila is Cassie Levy who is best known for her work as Penny in Hairspray on Broadway and her turn as Elphaba in the Los Angeles production of Wicked. What probably wouldn’t cause much reaction today created quite the controversy in the late 60’s with the profanity, depiction of the use of illegal drugs, the treatment of the American Flag and its nude scenes. The shows themes will hardly create the same shock factor it did forty years ago but what it will do is give a whole new generation of theatergoers an understanding of where the country was at this point and time and give the original 60’s generation a chance to relive there youth for a couple of hours. The music is good, the story is powerful and Hair is definitely worth experiencing! Tickets For Hair On Broadway InformationTickets for Hair on Broadway are selling for between $37 and $122.
