Broadway Play

History :: Now Playing :: Schedule :: Reviews

This extraordinary production opened on Broadway in November of 2007 at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre after a record breaking run in London’s West End. Rock ‘n’ Roll was written by four time Tony award winning playwright Tom Stoppard. The production deals with the significance of both music and the emergence of the democratic movement. It is a powerful, truth revealing journey that spans over two decades.

The play takes place at Cambridge University, England and Prague and begins in 1968 when Russia invades Prague. The course of the production takes the audience through twenty-two turbulent years, across two countries and three generations. The story focuses on Jan the Czech student who can’t get enough of rock ‘n’ roll; Max the Cambridge professor who lives for Communism; and his flower child daughter Esme who is always high on pot. By 1990 Russia is leaving Czechoslovakia and the Rolling Stones are moving in. The play ends with a brilliantly incorporated Stones concert that actually took place that year in Prague. The revolution is over but love and music remain. The play beautifully intertwines music and revolution and as the times change so does the music which is very evident throughout the play.

The cast is quite superb especially those reprising their roles from the London production. The benefit of having these seasoned performers in the current production is that they bring a certain sense of familiarity to their characters. The show features five of the original West End cast members including Olivier Award winner Rufus Sewell in the role of Jan. Sewell is best known for his portrayal of Septimus Hodge in Stoppard’s play Arcadia. The last time he was seen on Broadway was in 1995 as Owen in Translations for which he won the Theatre World Award. Brian Cox will reprise the role of Max. He is best known for his portrayal of Hannibal Lecter in the 1986 film Manhunter and his 2000 Emmy award winning performance in the mini series Nuremberg. He made his Broadway debut in the 1985 production of Strange Interlude.

While playing in London Rock ‘n’ Roll won the Evening Standard and London Critics Circle awards for Best New Play. The production marks the 40th anniversary of Stoppard’s first Broadway production; Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead. His work was most recently represented on Broadway in last years epic production of The Coast of Utopia which won seven Tony awards including Best Play. Stoppard’s plays are usually remarkable and most often unforgettable. This production is no exception.

Rock ‘n’ Roll is a deeply intellectual theater experience with complex dialogue and realistic character portrayals. Come and see why Peter Marks of The Washington Post said, “Exhilarating, Touching and Remarkable” when referring to this play. Tickets are currently on sale for this show.
