Top Girls On Broadway
The Manhattan Theatre Club presents a groundbreaking play by Caryl Churchill. Top Girls begins previews on April 15, 2008 at the Biltmore Theatre with an official start date of May 7, 2008. The talented female cast includes Mary Catherine Garrison, Elizabeth Marvel, Martha Plimpton and Academy Award winner Marisa Tomei in an inspirational story of sisterhood and what it means to be a strong, capable woman at the top of her game in a mans world. At the Top Girls Employment Agency Marlene has just been promoted to the head of the firm but while she has achieved success in her chosen career her values can’t exactly be applauded. Set in London in the early 1980’s during the Margaret Thatcher era the play is one of the most honest takes on being a woman in a modern world. It focuses on what it is like for a woman to get ahead and what she sometimes has to do to get there. The play debuted in 1982 off-Broadway at the Public Theater. It is a bold work that deals with power and class among women. Some of Churchill’s other works include Far Away and Cloud Nine. In this revival the cast includes some of Broadway and Hollywood’s cream of the crop. Award winning actress Marisa Tomei is probably best known for her sassy performance of Mona Lisa Vito in My Cousin Vinny for which she picked up an Oscar. She made her Broadway debut in 1998 as Susy in Wait Until Dark. Some of her other films include Chaplin, Untamed Hearts and Only You. Tony award nominated actress Martha Plimpton was most recently seen on Broadway in last years epic production of The Coast of Utopia and Cymbeline but is probably best known for her notable roles in films like Running on Empty, Mosquito Coast and Parenthood. Catherine Garrison is best known for her roles in the Broadway revival of Assassins and the 2006 production of Rabbit Hole. This celebrated play features a phenomenal cast that deliver an inspiring message not only for women but for anyone who has found the inner strength to achieve success despite the obstacles that may have gotten in the way.
