The Town Hall Theater is a landmark theater that regularly presents music, dance, film, lectures, and drama, among other events. A National Historical Site in the heart of New York, this beautiful and elegant space has had over the years many big names from the world of entertainment grace its stage. These eminent performers include Leonard Bernstein, Art Blakey, Bob Dylan, Marian Anderson, Stan Getz, Billie Holiday and Paul Robeson, among many others.
The Town Hall Theater, directly off The Times Square, opened its doors on January 12, 1921. The Town Hall was built by the League for Political Education as a result of the early 20th century’s women’s suffrage movement. The Town Hall Theater, with its 1,500 seats has great acoustics and an elegant interior. Designed by renowned architects, McKim, Mead & White, the Theater has no box seats and there is no seat that has any obstructed view in the auditorium. It was this quality that was the origin of the term - Not A Bad Seat In The House.
The great acoustics were accidentally discovered during the recital by the Spanish violinist Joan Manen, on Feb 12, 1921. A series of concerts by Austrian composer Richard Strauss later that year gave the Hall its reputation as a place for musical performances. The acoustics, the sight lines and the intimacy of the auditorium inspired various artists, and the Theater soon made a reputation as the place for artists to make their New York debut.
The Theater has gained further eminence by the performances of artists, such as Sergei Rachmaninoff, Ignace Paderwaski, Lily Pons, Fedor Chaliapin, Yehudi Menuhin, and many more, or maybe it was the other way round. The eminence of the Hall drew such eminent artists to its auditorium!
The Theater has an alliance with the TheatreWorks/USA to bring around 100,000 children each year for shows, such as A Christmas Carol, Freedom Train, Charlotte’s Web, The Nutcracker, Romeo and Juliet, among many other children’s programs. The Morning Performances at the Theater are offered free to public school students in grades 3 to 8.
The Theater has seen them all – from the highly acclaimed Not Just Jazz series that hosted from The Art Ensemble of Chicago, to the Lounge Lizards, to Cassandra Wilson, to Meredith Monk, and from Dance Brazil to Allen Ginsberg; The Broadway by the Year series; and Broadway Cabaret Festival.Attending The Performances At The Town Hall Theater
